COUNTING ON BRUNCH
Louisa Walters goes in search of the perfect brunch
When my daughter is home from Uni for the weekend it’s time for a mother/daughter day out. Naturally this begins with brunch and last weekend we decided to try out Counter in Vauxhall. We drove because I drive everywhere – it took just over half an hour from north London and we parked easily in a turning opposite the back entrance. But it’s literally next door Vauxhall station, under the railway arches. A unique location!
It’s very big (apparently London’s longest restaurant) and I was worried that at 11am on a Saturday it might be a bit soulless, but it was heaving. A steady flow of people were coming in the whole time we were sitting there. The charming front-of-house manager showed us to a lovely booth. The head chef is French and has lived in Turkey so brings the influences of both countries to the menu. The brunch menu is really extensive and there was lots we wanted to order. We settled on tartiflette (pictured above), a cast iron pan filled with baby new potatoes, onions, bacon and melted reblochon cheese that transports you straight to the Alps. We also had a thick slab of toasted brioche topped with hummus, roasted sweet peppers, sundried tomatoes, pine nuts and poached eggs. This was seriously good. And then, because we always have to have dessert, even in the morning, apple & Nutella stuffed French toast. Yes honestly. And yes it was as magnificent as it sounds. And no we didn’t eat again all day.
I really recommend this place – it’s definitely worth the journey, even for north Londoners, and we were in Selfridges within 20 minutes of leaving there! Check it out for lunch, dinner and cocktails too and they have just launched a fabulous spring menu. I’ll be back.
