Georgia Walters visits a Japanese gastropub (no, us neither…)

An Izakaya is best described as a Japanese gastropub, and this is exactly what Beer and Buns epitomises. Think great Japanese craft beer coupled with steamed ‘Hirata’ buns, or ridiculously tasty jumbo chicken wings – the combo works a treat.

Indulge in a portion of  spicy popcorn while trying your hand on the retro pinball and fussball tables before taking your pick from an extensive menu of Japanese treats. Each bun, such as the Aubergine Katsu and Chicken Karaage, is as delightful as the next (and each chicken wing spicier than the next!), and the staff will help you find the perfect beer or cocktail to complement your meal, whether it be a Hitachino Nest Beer or a Frozen Yuzu Margarita. The side dishes are particularly enticing – I certainly made the right choice ordering their new cheesy spicy fries (my jeans disagreed when I tried to do them up the next morning).

It’s not just the arcade games that make Beer and Buns such a fun mid-week spot, but the cool black chalkboard walls, on which you can scribble your own messages, and the picnic benches and oil drum tables also contribute to the laid-back, hangout-and-have-fun feel of the place. Further the chatty, friendly staff are incredibly inviting – in fact, I found myself being cheered on by them as I tried my very first sake bomb.
