FEELING PECKISH?

For my husband and me, last September heralded the start of our version of a year off, as both kids were away at university. Such an opportunity is embraced by many, but for us it was a sink into decline (are we really that old? where have the years gone? what are we going to talk about every night?). So we did what we do best – we went out for dinner! Pecking Order in Stanmore came to the rescue with its warm ambience, friendly service, great cocktails and finger-lickin’ good food. Now it is celebrating its first anniversary with an enticing new spring/summer menu, plus a weekend brunch service featuring dishes such as salmon smorrebroad (smoked salmon and egg on rye) and chicken & waffle. Pecking Order bills itself as being ‘for the love of the bird’ but it is now about so much more than just chicken. This week I feasted on fish tacos – battered cod pieces in a corn tortilla with all the trimmings, cayenne crumbed mushrooms with honey & mustard dipping sauce, spicy veggie quesadillas and a stunning seared tuna melt – fresh tuna steak with Monterey jack cheese, avocado, garlic aioli, and tomatillo salsa. Also new to the menu is a Korean chicken sandwich (apparently the chef’s favourite) and a halloumi & truffle portobello mushroom burger. All the old favourites are still there too, including the juicy slow-roasted rotisserie chicken and the mac ‘n’ cheese truffle bites. Do not leave without trying the apple pie! This September kid number one will be living back at home – I guess we’ll have to take him with us.
