GALVIN AT THE GOLF CLUB
So spring has finally sprung and when the sun shines I want to jump in the car and head out of town. How clever of the Galvin brothers to open their latest venture outside of London at the Centurion Golf Club in Hemel Hempstead. It’s easily accessible from the M1 but feels a million miles away!
I was there for dinner and I thought how gorgeous it must be on a sunny day – floor-to-ceiling glass doors afford magnificent views across a lake to the golf course, and in warm weather the doors open onto a large terrace with ample seating.
I really loved the restaurant – it’s so spacious and airy with calm, contemporary decor – fabulous lights, wooden tables and comfortable leather chairs. It was absolutely full with a great atmosphere. Small menu but so easy to choose from. Terrific steak tartare (pictured, left), light and delicate crab lasagne (this was my favourite dish), roast duck with confit duck boulangere (a kind of layered duck and potato thing – fabulous!), roast cod with endive and light curried dressing. All beautifully presented and served, all delicious. We had a glass each of the Galvin own label red/white. And then a chocolate fondant and a fabulous rhubarb cheesecake (pictured, right).
A little dish of truffles and macaroons was served with coffee – I love this touch and wish more restaurants would do it. Starters around £10, mains around £24, desserts around £8. Decent wines by the glass at £7 although their own label is more.
BONUS: Jeff Galvin popped out of the kitchen for a chat (he knows all about The Restaurant Club) and he is such a nice guy. The Galvin brothers have built up a great business – 12 restaurants in 12 years. Highly recommend – and we will definitely be going back for the great value set Sunday lunch or for dinner now the evenings are lighter.
