EATING OUT AS A FAMILY

Chloe Miller tells it from a 12-year-old’s perspective
Eating out is a great way, particularly as a child, to broaden your horizons of food. That is unless you restrict yourself to the children’s menu. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a young child who is a fussy eater. Maybe they don’t like anything too spicy or salty, but how are you able to say that they despise dumplings if they have never eaten one?! Children should be encouraged to eat similar meals to adults, just in smaller portions.
The number of my friends haunted by thought of an innocent asparagus is utterly ridiculous. To make matters worse, they haven’t even tried asparagus! It is easy to venture out to a restaurant, furthermore it is a relaxing environment and most of the time you can ask the chef to leave out one or two ingredients that don’t take your fancy. Of course you won’t enjoy all foods, but it is always worth giving it a try.
A top favourite in our family is Banana Tree, an Indochinese cuisine. We adore their laksa soup, the kid’s menu is sophisticated yet simple and the staff are friendly. We also like Chicken Shop, an awesome rotisserie chicken restaurant who make some seriously good apple pie. El Vaquero and the Chicken Shop are both examples of where children can eat similar meals to their parents, just in smaller quantities. Other restaurants we enjoy include; Delisserie, Pecking Order and Sushi Mania, all of which are well-suited to families.
What makes the above restaurants family friendly? Three magic ingredients are needed to encourage families to eat in these places:
- A welcoming environment
- Friendly staff
- A simple, sophisticated and enticing menu
Eating as a family is a very sociable event, supposedly free from twenty-first century technology. I despise it when blaring music or televisions are in restaurants – unfortunately, though, it’s quite common. After all, one of the nicest things in life is the fact that we all have to put down everything once in a while and just eat…
