When is a bagel more than just a bagel? When it’s a Yummies Magical Rainbow Bagel!

The Yummies bagel story began back in 2007, when Lawrence Samuel launched Yummies Deli in Radlett and started selling artisan, hand-rolled bagels to the locals. Yummies Bagels are made with maltflour to make them sweet, and boiled before baking to create the perfect combination of crisp exterior and chewy interior.

Lawrence feels passionately that everyone should have access to a ‘real’ bagel. “Bagels have long been enjoyed by the Jewish community here in the UK, and are generally available from local delis. There are mass produced varieties available in the supermarkets but these are not the same as hand-produced bagels,” he says. “You only have to taste one to realise the difference. A freshly baked bagel has a unique chewiness that can only be created by a boiling-baking combination.”

Earlier this year a friend sent Lawrence a link to a YouTube video about a multi-coloured ‘rainbow bagel’ that was taking New York by storm. He was truly inspired. “I figured that if it can be done over there, surely we can do it over here, so I got my bakers on the case,” he says.

Just 48 hours later the Yummies Magical Bagel was produced, and sales went through the roof.

“It has always been my dream to see my bagels in Selfridges, the most famous store in England,” says Lawrence. “As soon as the Yummies Magical Rainbow Bagel was produced I could just see it in the food hall. I contacted the buyer and 12 hours later I was on my way there with a sample.” The buyer was bowled over and Lawrence’s dream of supplying Selfridges came true.

The success of the Magical Bagel gave Lawrence and his bakers the inspiration to try other alternatives. They have produced red and pink versions for Valentine’s Day, blue and white/red and white ones to represent football teams, and then hit on the idea of a Chocolate Bagel.

Since early 2016 The Yummies Bagel has been rolled out across London and can now be found in Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.

Yummies produces an exciting range of bagels, including plain, poppyseed, sesame seed, mixed seed, rye, onion, rock salt, black and wholemeal, plus the Magical Rainbow Bagel and the Chocolate Bagel.
